Press Releases 2004
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Electronic
Clearing House, Inc. to Provide Visa Point-of-Sale Check Service to
Moneris Solutions
Camarillo, Calif., May 6, 2004 -
Electronic Clearing House, Inc. (Nasdaq: ECHO), a leading provider of electronic
payment and transaction processing services, announced today that it has
signed a contract with Moneris Solutions to provide the Visa Point-of-Sale
(POS) Check Service to Moneris customers. Moneris Solutions is one of
North America's largest electronic transaction processors with its primary
merchant base in Canada.
ECHO is one of only two
third-party processors and one of five acquiring processors
authorized for Visa's POS Check Service. Under the agreement,
Moneris will have an exclusive right to sell the Visa POS check
product to its U.S.-based merchants, which constitute a portion of
its total North American merchant base. Visa POS provides Moneris
merchants with the ability to receive immediate online authorization
for paper checks, converting them into electronic transactions at
the point of sale and, for checks written on banks that have
connected to the Visa POS program, verifies that funds are available
in the check writer's account.
When checks are written on a
non-participating bank, ECHO will provide the verification or
guarantee decision as a third-party authorization service, using the
Company's National Check Network (NCN) database. The merchant can
then hand the check back to the customer at the point of sale,
significantly reducing the check-handling costs. Unlike most
competitive offerings, the Visa POS Check Service offers various
levels of service to help merchants reduce fraud, including:
conversion only, conversion with verification, and conversion with
guarantee.
"We are very pleased to add
Moneris to the growing roster of financial institutions who have
embraced the Visa POS Check Service as an effective and convenient
way to prevent fraud and reduce check handling costs," said
Joel M. Barry, Chairman and CEO of Electronic Clearing House, Inc.
"We believe that Moneris merchants will greatly benefit from ECHO's
Visa POS Check Service as they become more aware about its low cost
and low risk advantages."
"Our contract with ECHO
highlights Moneris' commitment to delivering our merchants the
value-added services necessary to help grow their businesses,"
said Larry Wine, president of Moneris Solutions U.S. Group.
"With Visa POS Check Service, we are helping merchants reduce
the risk of check acceptance and eliminate the cost of processing
paper checks. We look forward to successful cooperation with ECHO
to bring this innovative solution to our customers."
